How Does Stump Grinding Work?

Using a rotating blade with sharp teeth, a stump grinder chews through the stump wood, reducing it to chips. The operator moves the blade across the stump, grinding it below ground level minimum of 4" but we aim to grind 6-12" below ground level when possible, but not guaranteed.

What Happens to the Wood After Grinding?

Stump grinding produces wood chips that can be used as mulch, composted, or disposed of as green waste. The hole left behind can be filled with the wood chips, soil, or prepared for planting.

Benefits of Stump Grinding

  • Eliminates eyesores and tripping hazards.
  • Prevents insect pests and fungal diseases.
  • Reduces the risk of lawn sinking as the stump decays.

Considerations for Building or Paving Over a Ground Stump

Since tree stumps decompose over time, any remaining wood can destabilize foundations or structures. Ensure complete removal of stump and roots, back fill with compacted native soil, and prepare the area adequately for construction.
