Windmill Palm, also known as the Chinese Windmill Palm, is a prized ornamental evergreen tree native to central and eastern China. Renowned as one of the most cold-tolerant true palms in the world, it allows gardeners in temperate climates to achieve a lush, tropical look far outside traditional tropical zones. The Windmill Palm grows as a single-trunked palm featuring a slim stem completely wrapped in a dense, dark brown, burlap-like fiber consisting of old leaf sheaths. At the top of the trunk sits a compact, symmetrical crown of stiff, fan-shaped (palmate) fronds (3 to 4 feet wide) on finely serrated petioles. The leaves radiate outward in a pinwheel fashion, giving the palm its common name. Typically the Windmill Palm reaches 10 to 20 feet tall in cultivated gardens (up to 30+ feet in optimal native conditions) with a compact canopy spread of 6 to 10 feet, making it ideal for tight spaces, patio plantings, or poolside accents.

Soil Type: Highly adaptable to sandy, loamy, or clay soils; prefers fertile, rich, well-draining soil; pH 5.5–7.5; dislikes waterlogged clay.
