Burkii Eastern Red Cedar is a tough, extremely cold-hardy needled evergreen conifer prized for its dense, uniform habit and striking seasonal color shifts. A classic cultivar of the native Eastern Red Cedar, 'Burkii' features a narrow, columnar-to-pyramidal form composed of tightly packed, ascending branches. Its fine-textured foliage consists of aromatic, scale-like needles that hold a vibrant steel-blue to silver-green color throughout the spring and summer months. As autumn turns into winter, the entire tree takes on a distinct purplish-bronze to steel-blue cast, adding rich visual warmth and structure to cold winter landscapes. On mature trunks, the fibrous, reddish-brown bark shreds into attractive vertical strips.
In residential and rural landscapes, 'Burkii' typically matures to fifteen to twenty-five feet in height with a neat eight to twelve-foot spread. Because of its dense, upright silhouette and tight branching, it is widely utilized as a formal evergreen screen, privacy hedge, windbreak, or accent specimen. As a female cultivar, when planted near a male Eastern Red Cedar, 'Burkii' produces an abundance of small, round, bright blue-gray berry-like cones coated in a frosted waxy bloom. These seed cones serve as an essential winter food source for songbirds, including cedar waxwings and robins, while the dense interior foliage offers critical year-round roosting shelter for local wildlife.
Culturally, Burkii Eastern Red Cedar is exceptionally resilient and virtually bulletproof once established. Thriving across USDA Zones 3a through 9b, it withstands extreme winter cold down to -40°F as well as scorching summer heat, drought, road salt, and strong winds. It strictly demands full sun exposure (at least six hours of direct sunlight daily) to maintain its dense foliage density and prevent interior stem dieback. It grows easily in almost any soil type—including poor rocky ground, heavy clay, dry sand, and high-alkaline limestone soils—provided the location drains well and does not remain waterlogged. Requiring minimal maintenance and boasting natural resistance to deer, 'Burkii' is a low-care choice for reliable, year-round privacy and structure.
