Orange Frost® Satsuma is a breakthrough, cold-hardy citrus hybrid developed by Dr. J. Wayne Ingram and Texas A&M University. Designated as an official Texas Superstar® plant, it was created by crossing a cold-tolerant Satsuma mandarin with a Changsha mandarin to deliver incredible cold resilience without sacrificing sweet, high-quality fruit. The Orange Frost Satsuma produces medium-sized mandarins with a smooth, bright orange "zipper" skin that peels effortlessly. The tender orange flesh contains very few to no seeds (0–2 per fruit). The oranges deliver a slightly higher sugar-to-acid ratio than traditional Satsumas, yielding a rich, intense citrus flavor that is both sweet and refreshing. The tree grows as a dense, manageable evergreen shrub or small tree reaching 8 to 10 feet tall (or smaller in containers). It possesses a naturally heavy-branching structure with nearly thornless stems. Fruit ripens in late fall (typically October through December), allowing you to harvest the entire crop before severe mid-winter freezes set in.
