Arctic Frost Satsuma Orange is a standout, record-breaking cold-hardy citrus hybrid developed by Texas A&M University. Designated as an official Texas Superstar® plant, it was created by crossing a Changsha mandarin with an Owari Satsuma to achieve the absolute maximum cold resilience possible in a sweet, high-quality mandarin. The Arctic Frost Satsuma Orange holds the title as one of the single most freeze-tolerant sweet citrus cultivars in existence. Established, mature trees can survive extreme winter drops down to 9°F to 11°F (-11°C to -12°C), making it a game-changer for growers in USDA Zone 8a. The Arctic Frost Satsuma yields medium-sized, bright orange mandarins with a smooth "zipper" skin that peels off effortlessly. The juicy flesh is tender, vibrant, and almost completely seedless (0–2 seeds per fruit). The tree grows with slightly more vigor than its sister variety (Orange Frost), forming an attractive, upright-to-rounded evergreen tree that reaches 8 to 12 feet tall in the ground (or 5 to 7 feet in patio pots).
