The Orange Brown Select Satsuma is an elite, early-ripening Satsuma mandarin cultivar selected in Louisiana. It was developed to improve upon the classic Owari Satsuma, offering slightly larger fruit, an earlier harvest window, and exceptional cold hardiness for northern citrus growers. The Brown Select Satsuma produces medium-to-large mandarins with a slightly higher acid-to-sugar balance and higher Brix (sugar) content than standard Satsumas. The orange flesh is exceptionally tender, juicy, and 100% seedless. The oranges feature a loose, pliable skin that slips off effortlessly in one piece without leaking juice. The fruit typically ripens 2 to 3 weeks earlier than Owari (typically mid-October through November), allowing you to harvest the entire crop well before the severe freezes of late fall and early winter arrive. Overall, the Orange Brown Select Satsuma forms a handsome, small-to-medium evergreen tree reaching 12 to 15 feet tall (or 5 to 8 feet on dwarf rootstocks), featuring dark green foliage, nearly thornless branches, and heavy annual yields.
