Japanese Black Pine
Pinus thunbergii is Texas adapted, native to Japan and South Korea. It is an evergreen tree, has a conical shape, irregular growth form as it ages. Black pine has dark green needles which are over 4 inches long and grow in clusters at the ends of the branches. Japanese Blackpine trees grow at a medium to fast rate, approximately 12 inches of growth per year. At 10 years the tree height should be 12 to 16 foot tall. At maturity, it will grow 20’-60’ tall and 12’-25’wide. Black pines prefers full sun, but will tolerate partial or light shade, and will grow in average, moist, well-draining soil. Great for bonsai. Grows well in USDA zones 5 to 9.
