Description: The Crape Myrtle ‘Red Rocket’ is a deciduous ornamental small tree celebrated for its vibrant red flowers that bloom profusely in summer. The blooms form in large panicles at the tips of the branches, creating a striking and long-lasting display. Its glossy green foliage provides a lush backdrop for the flowers, while the smooth, attractive bark adds visual interest throughout the year.
Size: ‘Red Rocket’ typically reaches a height of 20 to 25 feet (6 to 7.6 meters) with a spread of 12 to 15 feet (3.7 to 4.6 meters) at maturity. Available in 30-gallon size, this small tree has an upright, vase-shaped growth habit with multiple stems emerging from the base. It can be pruned to maintain a more compact form or allowed to grow taller as a bold accent or specimen plant.
Best Growing Zones: This Crape Myrtle thrives in warm, temperate climates and is suited to USDA hardiness zones 6 through 9. It prefers full sun, receiving at least 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight per day, and is relatively drought tolerant once established.
Soil Requirements: ‘Red Rocket’ prefers well-drained, fertile soils with good moisture retention. It adapts to sandy, loamy, or clay soils as long as drainage is sufficient. Adding organic matter such as compost or peat moss before planting can enhance soil structure and promote healthy growth.
Maintenance: This variety is low-maintenance once established but benefits from regular pruning to encourage healthy growth and abundant flowering. Remove dead, diseased, or overgrown branches to maintain shape. Light pruning can be done during the growing season, while more extensive pruning is recommended in late winter or early spring before new growth emerges. Mulching around the base helps conserve soil moisture, suppress weeds, and protect shallow roots.
